Quick Answer

IRRI-6 parboiled rice (Golden Sella) is paddy soaked, steamed under pressure, dried, then milled. The process hardens the grain, deepens the color to golden / amber, and extends shelf life to 18 months. FOB Karachi: parboiled 5% $373-$393/MT, parboiled 100% broken $340-$360/MT. The dominant rice form across West African retail and food service. Top markets: Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mozambique.

West Africa angle

West African retail runs on parboiled.

Across Ghana, Ivory Coast, and the wider West African coast, parboiled is the dominant rice form. Hardened grain, longer shelf life in humid storage, and golden color suit local cooking traditions. Institutional buyers and food-service operators default to parboiled for sauce-based dishes where grain integrity matters.

For market-specific detail, see the Ghana market page and Ivory Coast market page. Mozambique is also a growing parboiled buyer.

Why parboiled

The four-step process and what it changes.

  1. 1

    Soak

Cleaned paddy is soaked in hot water for 4-6 hours. Water-soluble nutrients move from the bran into the kernel.

  2. 2

    Steam

Soaked paddy is steamed under pressure. The starch gelatinizes inside the husk, hardening the grain.

  3. 3

    Dry

Steamed paddy is dried back to 13.5% moisture maximum. Rapid drying prevents fissures.

  4. 4

    Mill

Dried paddy is dehusked, polished, and graded. The end product is golden / amber, glassy, and harder than white.

Hardened grain. Lower breakage in cooking, holds shape better.
Higher milling yield. Less broken-grain loss in the polisher.
Golden color. Amber finish from gelatinized starch, not added color.
18-month shelf life. Versus 12 months for white, in the same warehouse.
Nutrient retention. Soak step pulls bran nutrients into the kernel.
Insect resistance. Glassy surface and low oil exposure.

Who buys IRRI-6 parboiled

Industrial parboiled-rice importers across Ghana and Ivory Coast pair parboiled with 25% white for institutional and food service. 50 kg PP woven bags land at Tema and Abidjan, with custom-printed packaging common for established Ghanaian and Ivorian brands. Smaller volumes route inland to Burkina Faso and Mali through Abidjan, and to Togo and Benin through Tema.

For other IRRI-6 grades, see 5% broken white, 25% broken white, and 100% broken rice. Daily FOB prices for all 9 grades sit on the IRRI-6 prices page.

IRRI-6 Parboiled FAQ

IRRI-6 parboiled rice ($360-$380/MT FOB Karachi) ships to Ghana, Ivory Coast, and other West African markets where parboiled is the consumer preference. Hardened grain, longer shelf life in humid storage, and golden color suit local cooking traditions.

Parboiling gelatinizes the starch and hardens the kernel. The result is a glassy grain with lower surface oil exposure, higher resistance to insect damage, and lower moisture migration in storage. Properly stored parboiled holds quality for 18 months in humid markets, versus 12 months for white.

Sella is the South Asian trade name for parboiled rice. Golden Sella refers to the amber-colored finish that comes from the soak-steam-dry process. Pakistani IRRI-6 parboiled and Indian IR64 parboiled both ship as Golden Sella. The terms are interchangeable in trade contracts.

5 x 20' FCL (~135 metric tons) for any IRRI-6 grade. Mixed grades are possible within a single FCL. Each 20' container holds 25-27 MT in 50 kg PP bags (500-540 bags per container). Private-label minimum is 10 x 20' FCL.

50 kg PP woven (standard commodity), 25 kg PP/BOPP (retail and food service), 10 kg and 5 kg non-woven or BOPP for branded retail. Minimum bag size is 5 kg. Custom-printed packaging available with minimums (15,000 bags BOPP, 5,000 bags non-woven).
